Connecting Hearts, Nurturing the Future

Vol. 1, No. 86 | June 16, 2026

Dear Family,

Last week, we celebrated a massive "Executive Win" with Mary Hels-Jager. We talked about the relief of the final adoption decree and the reality of the "Triple-Decker Club Sandwich" generation. But once the legal sanctuary is built and the red tape is cleared, a new challenge begins: The Promotion.

I recently sat down with my teen-parenting go-to, Jeanine Mouchawar. She helped me realize that as our grandchildren grow into their pre-teen and teenage years, we are being asked to step out of "Middle Management" and into the role of CEO. We realized that we can’t lead our teens into a healthy future if we are still micromanaging them out of a fear of their past.

The Raw Truth: The Silence in the Hallway

I’ll be the first to admit it: my biggest fear isn't the "fire" of a tantrum anymore—it’s the silence. I fear the day my grandchildren stop coming to me because they think I’m too busy being a "solution person" to just be their "human person."
Last week, when I felt that familiar heat of worry rising because of a door slam, I wanted to tighten the grip. I wanted to demand answers. But Jeanine reminded me that fear is a repellant. If I walk into that hallway with "doomsday thoughts," I’m not leading; I’m colonizing their space. I’m learning to listen to the "watermelon Jolly Rancher" smell without jumping to a level-10 judgment. I’m learning that my power isn't in my punishment—it’s in my presence.

Inside the Project: Episode 117

This Week’s Guest: Jeanine Mouchawar | The Executive Promotion: From Micromanager to Teen CEO

In this episode, we tackle the "Side-Door Approach" to communication. Jeanine explains why traditional rules and punishments often fail with traumatized teens and how to trade "Hulk Brain" for "Bruce Banner Brain." We discuss the "Five Simple Words" that can break a silent standoff and why your teen’s rebellion is often just a search for autonomy.

The Reflection Room

Jeanine challenged us with a powerful shift in perspective: You’ve been promoted. Think about a CEO you admire. They don’t stand over their employees' shoulders; they set the vision and build the guardrails.

Ask yourself today: In my home, am I a micromanager or a leader? Am I fighting to win the argument, or am I fighting to keep the relationship? Connection is the only currency that matters in the teenage years. Are you willing to "talk less and listen more" to buy back the influence you need?

The Toolbox: Tactical Moves

  • The Five-Word Audit: The next time you see a concerning behavior (a bad grade, a missed chore), use only five words: "What happened? What’s the struggle?" Then, stop talking. Let them fill the silence.
  • The "Watermelon Fact": Practice the Side-Door Approach. Instead of accusing, just state a neutral fact. "I noticed the dishes aren't done." Stay in the room with neutral energy and see if they don't move toward collaboration instead of defense.
  • In-the-Moment Coping: When a conversation gets heated, narrate your own regulation. Say, "I’m feeling a little frustrated, so I’m going to take a few deep breaths so I can stay steady for you." You are modeling the "CEO" composure they need to learn.

See you in the next boardroom,

Laura Brazan

Legacy Builders Connecting Hearts, Nurturing the Future Vol. 1, No. 90 | July 14, 2026 Dear Family, Last week, we sat with Katharine Giovanni and did some "Emotional Housekeeping." We talked about putting down the "purple cup" of resentment so our hands are finally free to hold our grandchildren. But this week, I have to get honest with you: it’s hard to hold anyone when your own arms are shaking from exhaustion. I recently sat down with Tamie Gangloff, an eating disorder expert and therapist...

Legacy Builders Connecting Hearts, Nurturing the Future Vol. 1, No. 89 | July 7, 2026 Dear Family, Last week, we sat with Matt O’Neill and dismantled the "Martyr’s Mask." We talked about how shifting from sacrifice to choice can make a 68-year-old grandmother feel like she’s 30 again. But even when we choose this life, there is often a "lead shield" we carry—a heavy, cold weight of resentment toward the people who left us with the wreckage. I recently welcomed back Katharine Giovanni, author...

We talked about how trauma rewires a child’s motherboard and why catching the "Sleep Wave" is a non-negotiable for a stable home. But what happens when the sun comes up, the coffee is cold, and the sink is full of dishes? I recently sat down for a heart-to-heart with Matt O’Neill, author of Good Mood Revolution. This...
