Connecting Hearts, Nurturing the Future

Vol. 1, No. 90 | July 14, 2026

Dear Family,

Last week, we sat with Katharine Giovanni and did some "Emotional Housekeeping." We talked about putting down the "purple cup" of resentment so our hands are finally free to hold our grandchildren. But this week, I have to get honest with you: it’s hard to hold anyone when your own arms are shaking from exhaustion.

I recently sat down with Tamie Gangloff, an eating disorder expert and therapist who specializes in the intersection of chronic illness and medical trauma. We did a "Health Audit" of the kinship home, and it forced me to face a heavy truth: In our mission to save our grandchildren, we are often dismantling our own hardware.

The Raw Truth: The Raw Truth: The 3:00 AM Architect

I have a confession to make. I’ve been getting up at 3:00 AM for months. I told myself it was "CEO efficiency"—the only way to get the research, the laundry, and the school lunches done before the chaos starts.
But last week, my doctor gave me a warning that shook me. He didn’t just give me advice; he looked me in the eye and said, "Laura, you don't have much time to wait." My stress levels, my lack of sleep, and my blood pressure are pushing my health to a breaking point.
I realized that I’ve been treating my body like a piece of rented equipment that I can run 24/7 without a maintenance schedule. I’ve been telling myself, "I’m doing this for the kids," but if I go down, the kids lose their safety net. Our health isn't "self-care"—it is the primary infrastructure of our home.

Inside the Project: Episode 121

This Week’s Guest: Tamie Gangloff | The Body Audit: Chronic Pain, Food, and the CEO’s Health

In this episode, we discuss why the body is the first asset we sacrifice in kinship care. Tamie explains how food becomes a "weapon or a shield" when life feels out of control and how to distinguish between a body image that is distorted versus one that is simply disturbed by medical trauma and aging. We also explore EMDR as a tool to reset a nervous system stuck in "High Alert."

The Reflection Room

Tamie reminded us that "Boredom and play are biological sedatives." Ask yourself today: Am I operating at a level of 'High Activation' that has become my new normal? When was the last time I sat in a hot shower or colored with a child without checking the clock? A CEO cannot lead a legacy if their vessel is empty.

The Toolbox: Tactical Moves

  • The "Back to Basics" Reset: If you are redlining, do something tactile. Color, build Legos, or take a 10-minute walk. It’s not a waste of time; it’s a nervous system reboot.
  • The Morning Mirror Ritual: Find one thing you like about yourself—even if it's just your earrings—and say it out loud. Your grandchildren are watching how you treat yourself; model the compassion you want them to have.
  • The Medical Advocate Worksheet: Use Tamie’s worksheet (linked in the show notes) to ensure your doctor sees the whole you, not just your symptoms.

You are the heart of the home, and you deserve the same nurturing you give everyone else. We are 2.7 million strong. Still nurturing, and still here.

See you in the next boardroom,

Laura Brazan

Legacy Builders Connecting Hearts, Nurturing the Future Vol. 1, No. 95 | August 18, 2026 Dear Family, It’s true confession time. I spent yesterday afternoon feeling like all I wanted to do was watch my plants grow. I felt guilty about it—like I was wasting "work hours"—until I realized I was experiencing a total system overload. Like many of you, I’ve tried to will myself out of exhaustion, forgetting that sleep and rest are biological requirements, not luxury items. My conversation with Dr....
