🛑 Stop burning out on emergency fuel: Setting your "good enough" metric

Dear Family,

Last week, we talked about how to navigate the overwhelming bureaucratic mazes without losing our core purpose. But what happens when the fight against those external systems begins to drain the very life force out of your home? How do you keep leading when survival demands 100% of your adrenaline?

The Raw Truth: The Overachiever’s Trap in the Boardroom

I remember sitting in my house during that first year and a half, staring at stacks of paperwork, trying over and over to get the kids' Medicaid transferred, and feeling my heart pound on pure emergency fuel. I was overperforming, oversacrificing, and completely falling apart inside—all while asking myself, Why isn't my parenting enough?

What I didn't realize then was that I was carrying secondary trauma straight into an outdated system designed to count on my self-sacrifice to fill their missing policies and empty budgets. The child welfare and education systems often exploit our willingness to burn out. We fall into the trap of believing that if we just push harder, advocate longer, or work until physical collapse, we can fix a broken infrastructure.

Here is the strategic pivot every Invisible CEO must make: System failure is not your personal failure. Pushing yourself to exhaustion won't fix policy gaps; it will only bankrupt your home's most vital resource—your own nervous system. Co-regulation begins with your own peace of mind. Your emotional regulation isn't a luxury or a secondary task—it is your primary executive duty.

Inside the Project: Episode 131

This Week’s Guest: Felicia Brown | Running a Nervous System Audit & Defining "Good Enough"

Former public educator and licensed professional counselor Felicia Brown joins us to break down how secondary trauma and systemic pressure exploit kinship caregivers. Drawing from her experience raising three children with complex PTSD, she reveals why system failure is never a personal parenting failure and shares tactical ways to protect your energy while navigating complex care.

The Reflection Room

This week, Felicia challenged us to rethink our definition of Capacity. In a system that constantly moves the goalposts, capacity isn't about how much stress you can endure before breaking—it is the honest assessment of your physical, emotional, and mental battery on any given day.

  • Ask yourself: Am I measuring today's success by how much I accomplished for the system, or by how well I protected the sanctuary of my home?
  • When I feel the urge to overperform today, am I acting out of strategic leadership or out of guilt and shame?
  • What is one boundary I need to set today to honor my current capacity?

The Toolbox: Tactical Moves

  • Set a Daily "Good Enough" Metric: Every morning before the house wakes up, define what a successful day looks like based on your actual capacity today. If your battery is low, let "keeping everyone safe and fed" be the entire line item, then cross it off and consider the job done.
  • Schedule Micro-Dopamine Boosts: Intentionally build small, non-negotiable moments of joy and regulation into your day—whether it's ten minutes with your favorite podcast, stepping outside, or sitting quietly with coffee—to signal safety to your nervous system.
  • Run a Strategic Involvement Audit: If taking on full-time care or single-handedly fixing a situation isn't realistic or healthy, reframe your role. Shift toward targeted support, such as offering respite care or leveraging extended family networks, recognizing that being involved doesn't require destroying your own stability.
