Connecting Hearts, Nurturing the Future

Vol. 1, No. 104 | October 20, 2026

Dear Family,

Last week, we unpacked how we can stop burning ourselves out while trying to manage the immense pressure on our families, stepping into our role as the Invisible CEOs of our households. But when relative caregivers step up in crisis to build a stable sanctuary for our grandchildren, we often run headfirst into a silent, unspoken battleground: how to protect traumatized children from invisible threats, online predators, and taboo topics we were never taught to navigate ourselves.

How do we hand our children the real tools for body safety and personal sovereignty without feeling like we are ruining their innocence?

The Raw Truth: Reclaiming Board-Level Control Over Safety

When we step up in crisis to take in our grandchildren, we are handed kids who have often lived through unthinkable instability. We pour our hearts into building a sanctuary, but so many of us, in the quiet hours of the night, are terrified of the invisible threats—the online predators, the unspoken trauma, the taboo topics we were never taught to navigate ourselves. We worry that bringing up body safety will ruin their childhood, when in reality, accurate information is the single most powerful shield we can give them.

When we don't give traumatized children the real names for their bodies, we don't protect their innocence—we rob them of their voice. The moment a bad actor uses their body against them, silence becomes the perpetrator's greatest weapon. Today, we strip away the embarrassment, audit the system, and reclaim board-level control over safety in our homes.

Inside the Project: Episode 135

This Week’s Guest: Dr. Janet Rosenzweig | Why Silence Is Dangerous: The Sex-Wise Playbook for Kinship Caregivers

Dr. Janet Rosenzweig—a powerhouse in child welfare with degrees from Rutgers and Harvard’s Kennedy School—joins us to break down how accuracy and open communication serve as a child's strongest protective shield. She hands caregivers an executive playbook to eliminate shame, demand accountability from youth organizations, navigate digital risks, and lead households with clarity and strength.

The Reflection Room

In our conversation, Dr. Janet introduced the crucial concept of Safe, Stable, Nurturing Relationships (SSNR)—the evidence-based foundation that allows a child to grow away from trauma and into safety. Culture doesn't change in state legislatures first—it changes at our kitchen tables.

Take a moment to reflect on your boardroom leadership this week:

  • Have you clearly established explicit household rules around privacy, undress, and personal boundaries without relying on euphemisms or shame?
  • Are you able to separate your adult child's past decisions from their identity, teaching your grandchildren that they are loved while rejecting unsafe behaviors?
  • What fears or generational taboos are stopping you from asking hard questions about safety policies in your child's sports leagues, schools, or youth programs?

The Toolbox: Tactical Moves

  • The Privacy Audit: Establish clear household rules regarding privacy within the first few weeks (e.g., boundaries around bathroom doors, clothing expectations in common areas, and respecting personal space) to teach children that their physical boundaries are valued and protected.
  • The Unified Inquiry: Audit youth sports leagues and community programs by asking leadership, "What are your specific locker room, sleeping arrangement, and digital device safety policies?"—and organize other parents to ask the same so safety becomes the default expectation.
  • The Solution-First Approach: When advocating for neurodivergent children or systemic changes before public officials and school boards, bring a specific, researched solution (such as requesting certified educators with human sexuality training) rather than simply stating the deficit.

You are the chief executive of your child’s sanctuary, and your courageous clarity is the ultimate shield that protects their future.

We are 2.7 million strong. Still nurturing, and still here.

See you in the next boardroom,

Laura Brazan

How often do you find...
