Podcast Spotlight
Licensed Social Worker- John Gesumaria.
|
In this week's episode, we feature the remarkable story of John Gesumaria, a man whose life journey epitomizes resilience, perseverance, and transformation. Born in 1988 to a social worker mother, John faced formidable challenges right from the start, including a broken clavicle at birth and enduring learning disabilities and mental health struggles. Yet, these early trials only strengthened his resolve.
John initially made his mark in corporate America as a process consultant, where he thrived for a decade despite navigating the complexities of a mental health condition. His passion for mental health advocacy remained unwavering, as he vocally championed awareness and support nationwide. His advocacy wasn't just a professional endeavor; it was deeply personal and rooted in his lived experiences.
In 2016, John's journey took a significant turn when he underwent a rare hip replacement. Rather than seeing it as a setback, John embraced it as a vantage point to understand challenges faced by others, particularly the elderly. His subsequent appointment as a guest lecturer at Columbia University's School of Social Work was a testament to how expertise and passion can intersect, inspiring him to pursue a social work career.
However, real life often presents unexpected challenges. By 2020, amid the global pandemic, John experienced a major career upheaval when he was laid off after ten years in his consulting role. While uncertainty loomed, a serendipitous email from Columbia University extended an application deadline, reviving John's aspirations for social work. He seized the moment, and weeks later, his acceptance into Columbia's MSW program sealed his calling to transform mental healthcare.
Throughout his life, John faced numerous challenges, from psychiatric hospitalizations to physical injuries which included a life-altering car accident. Yet, his resilience never wavered. He learned to channel adversity into strength, allowing him to grow, evolve, and find purpose. His commitment to mental health awareness saw him volunteer, speak publicly, and drive change in perceptions around mental health.
John's story is more than just personal triumph; it's a beacon of hope for those faced with similar battles. His journey is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and an inspiring reminder that life's adversities can be transformed into meaningful and impactful experiences. Tune in to this week's episode to hear John Gesumaria's incredible story and discover how his experiences continue to shape the future of mental health advocacy.
